As a car tutor, I'm always keen to find out what DVDs, books, websites etc might be useful both to me and other tutors and to students both beginners and more advanced.

So I kick off this thread with an item that interested me and, if you have seen it, I would value your opinion on its value for any particular audience.

The Chris Gilbert DVD: "Ultimate Driving Craft", somewhat pricey at c. £22.00 incl, p&p. [However, I've paid £15 for stuff that I have never finished watching!]. I have watched this from start to finish which must say something. There are certainly some things I don't like BUT, of the limited number of DVDs on driving commentary that I've seen, this is certainly the best. It deals with all of The System through the common thread of commentary and, as a tutor, I find it useful for suggestions for the teaching of commentary. How useful it would be to a beginning student, either supervised or unsupervised, I'm not so sure but, like the original Roadcraft video (or DVD if you're more up-to-date than me), I can see myself dipping into it over the years for revision and more ideas for tutoring.

But why oh why did it have to start with the oh-so-exciting blues and twos scenario - i.e. in that typical macho, high speed context which is, I would have thought, the very image we are trying to lose from the advanced driving organisations?

I had thought perhaps to review the DVD in a future Newsletter and am happy to steal anybody else's ideas!!!

Not having seen this DVD john i obviously cant comment on it, i think it would be a good idea to include it in the next news letter and if there is any chance of 'Lending it out' can i be first on the list i will then gladly give my views on its worthiness. Cool

John can we let Davey review this please? It would be great to get newsletter articles from our members!

Hi to you both - good to see some continuing forum activity!!

I would very much welcome Newsletter articles coming from other than committee members. I think the best way to approach reviews of resources like this is to get differing perspectives from tutors and students. I wrote my own draft review after I'd watched it a couple of times and I have already asked one student (as the price of borrowing it) to write a "student" review and have just (this week) passed it on to a second student with the same request. The DVD is advertised pretty much as a stand-alone item - i.e. seems to claim it doesn't really need an on-going course / contact with tutor so it will be good to get as many views as possible.

As for "letting" Davey review it, I'm happy for there to be as much input as possible. I'm sure Mel (Editor) would be pleased to have the luxury of choosing between articles or amalgamating two or more! If it starts to look like a composite job would be preferable, I'm happy to try to balance the act!

It will be several weeks before my second student will have got out of it as much as I think there is in it. There may be a case for the local group financing the purchase of such resources for use by tutors although I have my doubts about how widely these things ever get circulated: they tend to disappear off into dark corners or, worse, get illegally copied and widely circulated - OK (sort of) at the individual level but not so good if an organization (with a reputation to preserve) is involved.......

Regards,
John.
